If you love sailing and want to take it a notch higher by competing in races and competitions, here are some top sailing competitions in the world.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Australia

This sailing race takes place on Boxing Day each year in Australia.  Sailors start in Sydney and finish in Hobart, Tasmania. It is one sailing competition that has featured more women in its history.

Sint Maarten Heineken Regatta, the Caribbean

This sailing race has been sponsored by Heineken since 1983. The four-day world-class regatta attracts thousands of sailors from about 40 countries in about 300 boats competing in various courses, depending on the type of boats.

Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac), USA

This race has been held biennially since 1906. It starts in San Pedro and finishes in Honolulu .  For heavy yachts and leisure sailors who like offshore competitions, there is the Aloha class of the race.

Volvo Ocean Race

This race was established in 1973 in Portsmouth, UK, and holds every three years. Sailors compete in heavy weather with temperature variations from -5 to 40 °C. There is no prize money but competing and finishing the race is a lifetime achievement.

World Match Racing Tour

Starting 2001 and holds each year, 20 teams show tactical teamwork skills close to the shore, so that the public can follow the races with media and broadcast cover. The race has $1.5 million in prize money.

Transatlantic Race

This race attracts sailors that aim to cross the Atlantic from west to east. The race is divided into three classes: Racing, Racing/Cruising and Classic Yachts Division. There is also the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race every four years with only one crew member on board sailing the Atlantic for over 20 days.

Rolex Middle Sea Regatta, Malta

This is a major sailing event in the Mediterranean and has been on since 1968. It is an exciting 977-kilometre-long race that attracts more than 100 yachts and is sponsored by Rolex .

Route du Rhum, France

This is a transatlantic single-handed offshore race held every four years in November. The race starts in Saint-Malo, France and finishes in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.  Sailors compete in four categories, depending on the size of their yacht.
