About

Sailing is the art of relying on the power of the wind acting on sails to move a craft across a water surface. This could be the ocean, sea, river or stream. Sailing, as an activity, relies on the ability of the sails to get power from the wind to achieve both lift and drag. With the vessel in motion, the sails increase the wind power.

The speed and course of the vessel are determined by the wind and as the wind rushes the sails, the forces transmitted from the wind are resisted by forces from the hull, keel, and rudder of a sailing vessel to allow steering the course. So, it is possible to sail a vessel upwind as well as downwind.

Australia is surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans and separated from Asia by the Arafura and Timor seas, with the Coral Sea lying off the Queensland coast, and the Tasman Sea lying between Australia and New Zealand. This means that Australia boasts of so many water bodies perfect for sailing.

A sailing club is an organization of boat and vessel owners and sailors that cater to the needs of their members. These members could be sailors and non-sailors. The club provides sailing training, lessons and races. It can also offer social programmes for both members and non-members.

Sailing clubs also prepare members for sailing races, competitions at local, national and international levels. Some big sailing clubs organise races and competitions sponsored by corporate and social bodies who provide the prize money.
